Art as an inherent element of culture must be produced by society and return to it as a collective product. It is a democratic and cyclical process that at its core has the interaction of citizens with timeless existential questions of human beings. The identity of such a building is accurately described by the Latin term “FORUM”. The building as a public space serves as the land that confirms the interaction between people and art via spatial proximity.

According to our vision the building of arts is perceived as the portal for the entry of students, teachers, artists and all citizens interacting with it, in a place of culture, where the contact with art, the osmosis of the arts, the dialogue among works of art, the triggering of creativity and the organization of activities that stimulate the human spirit, will be developed daily.
The “D. DASKALOPOULOS BUILDING OF ARTS ” will be placed in a key point of the Campus of Psychiko, owned by the Hellenic American Educational Institution (H.E.I.). The field in which it will be built is perceived as a “non-urban gap” between an important functional axis that connects two gates of the Campus, with an also important network of routes that serves the daily function. Our architectural proposal is set to bridge this gap in the Campus function in an organized way, while evenly restoring the spatial continuity of daily activity. We propose a strong CULTURAL AXIS developed in two levels, that are indicated by the altitude difference of the end points that is called to bridge. From a landscape point of view, the field belongs to a strict border of two areas with a sharp and vertical altitude difference. The area with the highest altitude is a verdant area with an earthen terrain and gradual gradients of trees and shrubs. In contrast, the area with the lowest altitude level is a flat zone, without any planting surfaced with bitumen.
Our architectural proposal perceives the building as a factor that eliminates the above differences and attempts to create a smooth transitional condition from green to gray and from organic to rational and vice versa through the creation of a green double shell and planted roofs. The later hold a critical role in the bioclimatic and energy behavior of the building. While composing the arts building, we acknowledged that school life enters the building through the verdant zone during the operating hours of the H.E.I.. During non-operating hours, the building is mostly approached by the axis defined by the campus gates and the outdoor parking. This acknowledgment led to an independent entrance from the green zone, which leads to the ground floor, where the Educational Center, the area of art production is located. The Exhibition Area was designed at the same level as the tree-planted area. In this way, the Outdoor Space becomes the natural extension of the Exhibition Area, offering the desired extroversion and the integration of Art in students’ life everyday.
